Palestine More Developed Than the United States?



According to the World Bank, Palestine and the United States both had 100% access to electricity in 2023.


Palestine also nearly matched the United States in access to basic drinking water: 99% compared with 100% in 2024. And among the electricity generated locally, non-hydroelectric renewable sources accounted for 24.5% in Palestine, compared with roughly 14% in the United States in 2021.


Healthcare produces an even more remarkable comparison.


In 2023, health expenditure amounted to approximately $346 per person in Palestine. The United States spent more than $14,000 per person—over 40 times as much. Yet in the last full year before the war, Palestinian life expectancy was roughly 77 years, virtually the same as the US figure of 77.5 years.


Read only those numbers and an extraordinary story emerges.


Palestine has achieved American-level electricity and water access, generates a greener local electricity mix and delivers almost the same life expectancy while spending a fraction of what the United States spends on healthcare.


Every statistic in that statement is real.


The story is completely misleading.


The problem begins with the word access.


Electricity access is generally recorded as whether a household has a connection. A Palestinian household receiving unstable or insufficient electricity can therefore be placed in the same statistical category as an American household receiving uninterrupted power around the clock. The World Bank itself warns that having a connection does not guarantee electricity that is reliable, affordable or sufficient.

The same problem appears in the drinking-water figure.


“Basic drinking water” does not necessarily mean water is continuously available inside the home, available in sufficient quantities or free from contamination. Under the international definition, an improved water source can qualify as a basic service when the round trip needed to collect water takes no more than 30 minutes.


The number is measuring something real. It is simply measuring much less than most readers assume when they see the phrase “access to drinking water.”

The renewable-energy comparison hides its weakness in the denominator.


The 24.5% figure refers to electricity produced locally. It does not describe all the electricity consumed in Palestine. The Palestinian electricity system has historically depended heavily on imported power, particularly from Israel. A high renewable share of a relatively small amount of domestic generation can therefore coexist with extensive reliance on imported electricity generated from other sources.

Then there is healthcare.


Spending $346 per person while producing the same life expectancy of a country spending more than $14,000 sounds like extraordinary efficiency. But health spending in current US dollars is influenced by salaries, prices, population age, the services included, external assistance and the cost structure of the entire economy.


The comparison therefore does not prove that Palestine’s infrastructure or healthcare system is equivalent to America’s.


It proves something more important about data.


Statistics compress reality.


That compression is necessary. No dashboard can contain every power interruption, every hour spent waiting for water, every unavailable hospital bed or every patient unable to reach treatment.


But once reality is compressed into a single percentage, much of the meaning can disappear.


“Electricity access” is not electricity reliability.

“Water access” is not water availability.

“Renewable electricity production” is not the country’s full energy supply.

“Health expenditure” is not healthcare received.

“Life expectancy” is not a complete evaluation of a health system.


None of these indicators is defective. Each answers a specific question.


The mistake is allowing it to answer a much larger question than the one it was designed to measure.


This is why statistics should arrive in packages.


Electricity access should be accompanied by hours of supply, outage frequency, affordability and capacity. Water access should be accompanied by quantity, continuity and quality. Renewable generation should be accompanied by imported electricity and total consumption. Health spending should be examined alongside coverage, medical capacity, unmet needs, outcomes and inequalities.


The usual warning is that statistics can lie. But in this case, the statistics did not lie. Just a case of missing context.



That is the danger of reading one statistic as though it were the whole story.
